Yogi Tea

The history of Yogi Tea is an interesting one. Yogi Bhajan, a well-known Kundalini Yoga instructor, began serving his own blend of tea and spices based on his knowledge of Ayurveda* and healthy living after his yoga classes. The recipe contained five traditional Ayurvedic spices including cardamom seed, cinnamon bark, clove bud, ginger root, and black pepper. His students named this blend “Yogi Tea”. Many of the components of this original recipe can still be found in Yogi Teas that we sell here at The Green Life Market.

The Yogi Tea Company was founded in the 1984, after many years of a grassroots endeavor by students of Yogi Bhajan. The tea was originally served in restaurants where the patrons wanted to take the tea home for home brewing. The company continued to expand their lines of teas using highly specialized herbal formulas to address specific health needs. In 1991, the company began its’ quest to use organic and fair trade herbs and spices. Today, 17 Yogi Teas are certified organic and 36 teas are classified as “made with organic ingredients”. The company continues to seek out more sources of organic herbs, oils, and extracts.

Yogi Tea offers a variety of teas sure to please any pallet. From exotic flavors to a smooth finish, there is a tea to comfort, energize, or heal your mind, body, and spirit. There is also a large selection of green tea, many of which we carry here at The Green Life Market.

Yogi Tea is developed and produced in Eugene, Oregon. You can find more on Yogi Teas by visiting their website at www.yogitea.com.

*Ayurveda: is an ancient system of health care that is native to the Indian subcontinent. The word "Ayurveda" is a compound of the word āyus meaning "life", "life principle", or "long life" and the word veda, which refers to a system of "knowledge". Thus "Ayurveda" roughly translates as the "knowledge of life", or "knowledge of a long life". According to this perspective, Ayurveda is concerned with measures to protect "ayus", which includes healthy living along with therapeutic measures that relate to physical, mental, social and spiritual harmony.

Sustainable Bite of the Week

Plastic Schmastic

According to the San Francisco Department of Environment and the World Watch Institute www.worldwatch.org 4 trillion to 5 trillion nondegradable plastic bags are used worldwide annually.

Kristine, owner of The Green Life Market, witnessed neighborhoods in Nairobi, Kenya plagued by mounds of used plastic bags. They were hanging off fences, wrapped around electrical lines, and clogging up drains. These plastic bags are also notorious for the collection of pooling water which in turn, provides a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes and other nasty parasites.

Plastic bags are not only a problem in Kenya, but all over the world. And they don't just act as nasty trash. Did you know that 430,000 gallons of oil is ended to produce 100 million nondegradable plastic bags? I don't think we need to tell you why that isn't good!

In order to reduce the use of plastic bags, please take a canvas bag, a basket, or your favorite back pack to the store next time you go. And not only to the grocery store, but to your favorite clothing store or even your favorite restuarant. Your contribution will reduce our use of oil, reduce environmental impact, and will cost retailers less, thus passing the savings on to the consumer.

See, it's that easy!

The Green Life Market is committed to reducing plastic bags by packing our groceries in brown paper bags. We are currently running a promotion:

Spend $50 and receive a free TOTE!

As always, you bring in your own bag, and you will be rewarded!
